We are the ones our planet has been waiting for.
Every year, the average household in the UK puts out about 8 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. A huge chunk of this is from the electricity (21%) and gas (29%) for our homes. The second largest portion is from driving our petrol or diesel cars (34%). This translated to UK households contributing to 40% of the UK’s carbon emissions!
Why does this matter? Because individuals, households and small businesses can lead on this fight faster and more effectively and have a radical impact on UK emissions. So why isn’t anybody talking about this?
The Extinction Rebellion movement across London in March 2019 did one thing right. It brought a renewed sense of urgency to those in government and business to take measures to ensure we do the most to mitigate the ‘anthropocene extinction’ — mass extinction of plant and animal life as a result of human activity. This matters whether you’re a climate change skeptic or like most people unsure of what to do (deer caught in the headlights). Because it is becoming increasing apparent that although social and impact metrics are becoming part of the mainstream narrative in industry commercial decisions, we still cannot expect government and big business to drive this revolution — like our politics today, we will be bitterly disappointed if we do.
There is another way. Grassroots, household and community driven. It starts with us. If each home switched to a renewable and green energy supplier for their electricity and gas needs, and committed over the next 5 years to switching from a convention petrol/diesel car to a pure electric vehicle we can cut down UK household carbon emissions by half. That’s huge if this can be done over the next 5 years!
This is the revolution we at ChargeBound are fighting for…its a crucial battle in the war to save our planet. But we think a decentralised and household driven movement can be the driver to the kind of exponential change we need in fighting climate change.
We are the ones we have been waiting for. We are the ones our planet has been waiting for.
